ATSI opened for business in 1993 on a back street, unknown to a lot of locals. It started from a figment of the imagination that was fed with pure ethical decisions that allowed it to grow into what it is today.

ATSI provided the city of Lawrence with complete automotive repair that was superior to others allowing it to grow as a company. (The owner of ATSI had a passion for transmission repair and referred to the way ATSI performed it as transmission correction at a higher level.) After seven years at 2720 Oregon St. ATSI, then referred by the full name Automotive Technology Specialists Inc., took their passion for transmission correction to the back of a used car lot on 23rd Street with a new triangle logo, a shortened name, and the new mission they live by, Transmission correction at a higher level.

After another seven years buried and embarrassed to be in the back half of a used car lot. ATSI bought and moved to their present location at 1226 E. 23rd Street, with an eight bay shop and for the first time Main street frontage. ATSI decided to take their warranty to the next level by making all work and repairs carry the same coverage as their transmission, 3 years 50,000 mile parts and labor warranty with no excuses. With numerous shops in the area claiming to be transmission shops, ATSI has offered; Real transmission check outs for free with a complete courtesy check, so that customers have a complete assessment of the vehicles condition before they make any decisions on any overhaul or repair. ATSI believes that their savvy clients, given the accurate information, time and all questions answered, are in a position to access their needs and make a decision that is in their best interest with no hassles from a service writer. ATSI has the capability to diagnose, repair, rebuild or give the customer an option for an outsourced transmission.

Unlike many pretenders, posers or installers, all warranty work is done and decided by ATSI. ATSI believes it is unethical to sell a repair, part, service or a transmission without being responsible. Even if ATSI sells a transmission from another vendor, ATSI will still honor the warranty as their own. With a 3yr 50,000 mile warranty. Whatever service, repair or build is done at ATSI our competent knowledgeable staff is there to handle the job and ensure it is done right.

All of the owners family has at one time worked at ATSI. Duane’s oldest Dustin helped build the business and now owns Standard Tire and Auto in Perry Kansas. Michael his younger son now saves people instead of cars as a paramedic with AMR in Topeka Kansas.

Terry Taylor as Service Manager is always trying to maximize in our customers best interest. Contributing to the success of ATSI are the technicians listed as follows; Danny Munck, ATSI’s lead technician and rebuilder has spent over 10 years with ATSI. Bobby Kurtz has been with ATSI since he graduated high school and is our lead removal and installation technician. Bryson Conaway is a part time technician and attending University of Kansas. Ben Broky, ATSI newest technician covers drive ability concerns, maintenance and everything that is not transmission related. Ben brings 17 years of knowledge to ATSI and is ASE certified. Cheryl Cox one of the owners does the accounting and customer relations. Duane Cox the other owner is there on a daily basis diagnosing, training, cleaning and handling needs as they arise.

In the age of no service, meaning poor accountability and lack of responsibility, this group of dedicated individuals, are here in 2011 and for many years to come, to provide full accountability and responsibility; as they set the industry standard for automotive correction at a higher level.
